The European Maritime Day is celebrated annually on the 20th of May.
The purpose of this date is to raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges that the sea brings in the areas of innovation, research and cooperation.
On the other hand, it is intended to highlight the importance of environmental preservation and the biodiversity of the seas.
This day was created through the Joint Tripartite Declaration (of the European Commission, the European Council and the European Parliament) establishing the European Maritime Day, on 20 May 2008.
