17th Summer School of Greek Language and Culture

Visit to Koroni and to the Maniatakeion Foundation – Mediterranean Diet

On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, it was with great joy and excitement that Koroni welcomed fifteen Greek – American and Greek – Canadian students, who visited the city within the 17th Summer School of Greek Language and Culture for young Greek – Americans and Greek – Canadians. The visit was organized and carried out through a joint initiative of the Pan-Messinian Federation of America and Canada and the Maniatakeion Foundation, which, for many years, has actively supported the preservation of the Greek language and identity as well as the Mediterranean Diet among younger generations of the diaspora.

The students had the opportunity to begin their tour at the Maniatakeion Foundation, where they were warmly welcomed by the Chairman of the Foundation, Mr. Dimitris Maniatakis, and the Vice Chairwoman, Mrs. Eleni Tagonidi-Maniataki. They tasted local delicacies, including traditional Koroni “tiganopsoma”, fried bread dough with cheese, Messinian feta cheese, and olives, kindly offered and prepared by the talented Mrs. Irini, who impressed them all with her hospitality and the authentic flavors of her Mediterranean dishes.

During their touring the town, the students had the opportunity to learn about the principles, values and objectives of the Mediterranean diet. Furthermore, Olive Oil Taster Ioannis Dionysopoulos (WSET L3) offered an exciting extra virgin olive oil tasting course, enthusiastically presenting the features, varieties, and quality characteristics of this valuable product of the Messinian land.
