The Dryland Orchard book

Last February, at the event to present the book “O Pomar de Sequeiro” (The Dryland Orchard), the President of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDRALG), José Apolinário, highlighted the importance of agriculture and rural development for the ALGARVE 2030 regional development strategy. He also defended the integration of the Mediterranean Diet into this strategy.

At the presentation of the book “O Pomar de Sequeiro“, five key ideas were highlighted for regional development and for the Algarve region in 2030.

They are:

1. The key importance of water;

2. The importance of agriculture for regional development and the economic diversification of the region’s economic base;

3. The valorization of dryland products with more innovation and added value in products, with new products from almonds and locust beans, olive oil or figs, valorization of more traditional production methods, organic or integrated production;

4. The importance of articulating and coordinating public policies, regional and rural development policies, in the implementation of the regional development strategy;

5. The Mediterranean Diet.

This publication aims to mark the 10th anniversary of UNESCO’s approval of the Mediterranean Diet’s application to become an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which was celebrated on 4 December 2023 and is intended to raise awareness among the various public and private bodies and the general public of the heritage and socio-economic value of the Dryland Orchard.

The publication is part of the operation “The Algarve in the Mediterranean Diet”, funded by CRESC Algarve 2020 – FEDER, which is the result of an application submitted by various partners.
