Tavira Municipal Museum’s “Hamper from the Land or the Sea” project aims to showcase local products, traditional knowledge and producers in the municipality of Tavira. Through visits to farms, salt pans and other activities linked to the land and the sea, participants have the opportunity to learn about production processes, engage directly with producers and understand the importance of these resources for local identity and the local economy.
This project helps promote the circular economy and short supply chains, bringing producers and consumers closer together, cutting out intermediaries and encouraging the consumption of local products. One of the most significant aspects of the initiative is that the participation fee is paid directly to the host producer, contributing directly to the local economy and to the appreciation of the work carried out in the area.
As part of this initiative, a visit to Tavira’s salt pans took place on 31 May, giving participants a face-to-face experience of artisanal salt production and the heritage associated with this centuries-old activity. The next activity is scheduled for 18 July, with a visit to Casa Santos Lima, a regional wine producer, where participants will be able to discover the vineyard landscapes and the importance of this activity for local identity.
Payment for these activities is made directly to the producer and, at the end of each visit, participants return home with a hamper of products from the producer they have visited, taking with them not only the flavours of the territory, but also a greater understanding of the importance of supporting local production and more sustainable consumption models. In this way, the project strengthens the local economy, preserves traditional knowledge and helps forge a closer bond between the community and Tavira’s producers.
