From 3 to 6 September, Tavira hosted the 12th Mediterranean Diet Fair, organised by Tavira Municipal Council in collaboration with the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission, Associação INLOCO, Algarve Tourism Board, University of the Algarve, the Algarve and Vila Real de Santo António and Tavira Hotel and Tourism Schools, and Tavira Verde. The four-day programme was dedicated to celebrating and promoting this intangible cultural heritage inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Local gastronomy, farmers’ markets, traditional crafts, culture, health, sustainability and tradition were at the heart of another edition of the Fair, bringing together producers, craftspeople, associations, institutions, restaurants and visitors.
Local gastronomy took centre stage, with the participation of restaurants and pastry shops from the city, which brought Mediterranean-inspired flavours and dishes to the Fair, strengthening the connection between the event and the local economic and gastronomic community.
The Praça da Convivialidade and the Producers’ Market, organised in partnership with Associação In Loco, once again provided spaces for meeting and sharing, promoting local production and closer links between producers and consumers.
Music and live concerts also played a prominent role, with a diverse programme spread across the Fair’s different stages, creating opportunities for entertainment, socialising and encounters between different artists and musical styles.
The children and young people’s programme offered opportunities for discovery and learning through fun and educational activities focusing on healthy eating, local products, sustainability and the values of the Mediterranean Diet.
The Authors’ Meetings were also part of the programme, providing opportunities for presentations, reflection and discussion around books and themes related to culture, food, the territory and Mediterranean values.
The 12th Mediterranean Diet Fair therefore reaffirmed Tavira’s commitment to the safeguarding, promotion and transmission of a living heritage.
